REEF RESTORATION
"It is the worst of times but it is the best of times because we still have a chance. Our past, our present, and whatever remains of our future, absolutely depend on what we do now!"
- Sylvia Earle
Bay Islands Reef Restoration is dedicated to creating offshore coral nurseries and restoration programs for threatened coral species. We grow and maintain endangered corals in offshore coral tree nurseries until they can be strategically outplanted on reefs to foster coral reef recovery.
We work with resorts, dive operations, conservation organizations, and the local and federal government to help restore threatened coral species on Roatan’s reefs, which are vital for Roatan’s economy and environment.
Are you interested in marine conservation and want to learn more about coral reef health? Have you noticed a decline in coral abundance and health during your last dive vacation? Do you wish there were a way to engage in marine conservation to help protect and restore the beauty of the underwater world?
Bay Islands Reef Restoration provides you with the opportunity to actively participate in coral restoration by helping us maintain our coral nurseries and outplant coral. We offer several options for how you can join us in restoring Roatan’s coral reefs.
The PADI - Reef Restoration Diver Distinctive Specialty consists of a theory session followed by two dives. You will learn about coral conservation, participate in coral nursery maintenance and outplant corals back onto Roatan’s coral reefs.
The Reef Restoration Adventure Dive provides the opportunity to help maintain corals in our nursery or participate in a survey dive to monitor the health of our outplanted corals.
Bay Islands Reef Restoration offers a comprehensive conservation internship program which includes practical fieldwork in coral restoration. If you share our passion for coral reef conservation we hope you will join us in working to restore Roatan’s reefs.
