Bay Islands Reef Restoration offers a comprehensive conservation internship program which includes practical fieldwork in coral restoration. If you share our passion for coral reef conservation we hope you will join us in working to restore Roatan’s reefs while you learn about coral reef ecology and explore various aspects of marine conservation. We want to help you build your career in conservation.
A coral internship with BIRR offers hands-on experience in all aspects of coral conservation with a busy and growing non-profit organization. You will work with us in all areas of coral restoration including:
We include our PADI - Bay Islands Reef Restoration Diver Distinctive Specialty course ($140 value) as the foundation for your internship. The PADI certification course will provide an introduction into coral ecology and coral restoration and an understanding of our daily operations.
You will learn new skills, not only in diving and marine conservation, but also in learning about diverse cultures and languages that will help you grow and develop as a person. You will have the opportunity to learn from local Garifuna Divemasters who have been living here and diving on this reef their whole lives. You can also practice your Spanish or learn the local Garifuna language, as well learn about Garifuna food, dancing and weekly parties in nearby Punta Gorda.
We will work with you to design an internship where you decide how long you want to stay and what you want to learn. You will live in our fully furnished Divemaster intern house with new friends who all share the same passion - THE OCEAN! In the case you decide to gain more dive experience, our partners Subway Watersports and the Roatan Dive Academy offer all varieties of PADI courses, including continuing education, specialty courses, professional development courses, and technical diving.
