Are you interested in learning about coral ecology and participating in coral restoration? The PADI Bay Islands Reef Restoration Distinctive Specialty provides that opportunity. Become a certified coral restoration diver and help us restore coral reefs - one coral at a time!

Course Overview:

  • Classroom learning about coral ecology, coral stressors, and coral restoration procedures

 

  • Participate in coral nursery maintenance

 

  • Plant coral back on the reef

 

  • Become a coral conservation advocat

What to Expect

Content of the course

 

  • Importance of the coral reefs

 

  • Coral ecology and coral biology

 

  • Stressors impacting coral reefs around the planet

 

  • Instruction on how to clean the coral trees

 

  • Training in outplanting procedures, how to choose outplant sites and how to use the tools and epoxy
THEORY:
FIRST DIVE:(coral nursery)

 

  • Use scrapers and brushes to clean the trees

 

  • Install corals on a tree

 

  • Treat any coral disease

 

  • Collect coral for outplanting
SECOND DIVE:(outplant site)

  • Attach monitoring tags to mark genotypes for future monitoring

 

  • Select outplant sites

 

  • Use all tools and materials to succesfully attach coral fragents to the reef
